Does Duolingo teach you enough? ›

Research shows that Duolingo is an effective way to learn a language! But the truth is that no single course, app, method, or book can help you reach all your language goals.

There is no such thing as a “finished” language course. So at Duolingo, we're always working to make our courses better! If you've gotten an update, it's because we're excited to share the latest changes to the existing course.

No, unfortunately you cannot reach fluency with Duolingo. That doesn't mean Duolingo is a bad option for learning a language. It just means that you'll need to use other resources to supplement your learning (conversation exchanges, watching movies and series, reading books, magazines, and so forth).

For some people who are quick learners and pick up language naturally, it might take just 300 or 400 hours of using the app. For others though, it might take well over 1,000 hours of dedication.

Duolingo vs Rosetta Stone, which is better for travel? If you are going to be travelling and want to learn a language at a beginner to intermediate level, we believe Rosetta Stone is a better option than Duolingo. Their lessons are more comprehensive and you will learn more quickly.

Try to keep it up every day, even if you just play a few lessons. Each level is very short, so it's not hard to play just even one or two levels a day. Of course, it's more rewarding the more you can play per day, but even at a casual pace you should be able to learn gradually.

Try to practice for at least 15-20 minutes every day. While Duolingo is an excellent language-learning app, it should not be your only resource. Supplement your learning with additional resources such as language exchange apps, language courses, and language-learning podcasts.

Streak rewards

Reaching certain milestones (such as 100 day streak) can earn the user 3 days free of Super Duolingo. If, however, you use the web instead of the app to extend your streak, you will still get the 3 free days of Super Duolingo.

If you have previous experience with a language and feel that lessons are too easy, you can scroll to the next locked unit and tap the circle that says “Jump here?”. If you pass the test, you'll unlock that unit! NOTE: This will complete all levels up to that point.

What happens if you make too many mistakes in Duolingo? ›

Hearts are used as a way of pacing Duolingo lessons to balance practice and new material. You can lose Hearts by answering incorrectly too many times, which has been encouraging users to pay closer attention to what they are answering before hitting “check”.

However, in general, Duolingo assigns a score of around 100-120 for an average learner who has completed the basics of a language, and the score goes higher for more advanced levels. So, a score of 125 can be considered as above average in Duolingo.

Once you complete all the levels in a unit, you'll complete a challenge to earn your unit trophy. You'll also have the option to earn the Legendary trophy for each unit. NOTE: Super subscribers have unlimited attempts at Legendary.

Additionally, the concept of “learning Spanish” can vary depending on your goals, as fluency can take years of practice and immersion. Duolingo estimates that it takes approximately 34 hours to complete the Spanish course for English speakers, which includes 140 lessons and covers basic grammar and vocabulary.

The app's gamification, accessibility, bite-sized lessons, variety of languages, and adaptive learning are all significant advantages. However, its limited speaking and listening practice, limited grammar explanation, overemphasis on vocabulary, lack of immersion, and limited feedback are potential drawbacks.
