The Bernabéu was La Liga's largest stadium in 2023/24, being able to accommodate over 81,000 spectators. Civitas Metropolitano, home to Atlético Madrid, was the second-largest venue, with a capacity of over 70,000. During the previous season, theLa Liga's total attendance reached its highest peak since 2009/10, at more than 11 million.
Attendance at soccer matches in Spain
Spaniards are passionate about soccer, a sport that is often conceived as much more than just entertainment – it revolves around strong feelings and emotion. One way for fans to capture this sentiment is by showing up at their favorite sports team’s stadium to show support, and the average attendance in La Liga amounted to more than 29,000 in 2022/23. In that season, Barcelona reported the highest number of fans on average, with Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid in second and third place respectively.
Soccer as a global phenomenon
Looking at major soccer leagues worldwide, the first division in Spain did not record the highest average match attendance in 2022/23. Germany's Bundesliga, England's Premier League, and Italy's Serie A all ranked ahead of La Liga, which placed fourth.
