Unlike domestic students, international students don't qualify for federal or state aid and typically use personal and other financial resources, mainly from outside the U.S., to cover tuition and expenses. But there are options available at the institutional level, including grants and scholarships.

International student loans are available year-round and can cover up to the total cost of school minus any other financial aid received.

Sallie Mae provides loans to qualifying international students with a U.S. cosigner. They offer both fixed and variable rate options with zero origination fees. Additionally, they provide multiple repayment options for added convenience.

Li Fund for International Students – At least $60,000 for a student who is not a resident of the United States, especially for students from countries where the need is particularly great. Barbara London Lemann Scholarship – Up to $30,000 for a student in the M.A. Arts and Culture Concentration.

Whether you plan to study abroad for a semester or get your entire degree outside the United States, you may be able to use federal student aid to pay your expenses. The type of aid you can get—and the process you must follow—will depend on the type of program (study-abroad or full degree) you plan to enter.

If you are a foreign student or non-citizen and are eligible to be classified as a Texas resident for tuition purposes, you may also be eligible to receive state financial aid. To apply for state financial aid, submit the Texas Application for Student Financial Aid (TASFA).

State and federal financial aid from your home institution can often be applied to the costs associated with studying or interning abroad. This includes Stafford Loans, Parent PLUS Loans, Direct Loans, Pell Grants and more.

In most cases, you can apply some or all of your financial aid to your education abroad program. To apply any of your financial aid to your education abroad program, you must earn academic credits or units on your program. F-1 and J-1 students under Teachers College sponsorship may apply for SSNs provided they meet SSA eligibility requirements. These include: Valid immigration documents , including a valid passport, valid I-20 or DS-2019, and an I-94 card or electronic I-94 notated "F-1 D/S" or "J-1 D/S."

Unfortunately, as work-study is federally funded, the program is not open to international students. This means that some on-campus jobs may be “work-study only,” or only available to domestic students participating in the program.

Many universities in the U.S. offer scholarships to international students. It can depend on which college or university the student wants to attend. In addition, the Fulbright scholarship, which is funded by the government, gives full-tuition scholarships to its recipients.
