Note: Here is a general way to convert Fahrenheit to Celsius without having to consult a chart:

Subtract 32, multiply by 5, then divide by 9

If you are able to use a generally close enough match for your conversion purposes, you can also simply take 30 off the Fahrenheit value, and divide that number in half.

Plus, if you ever see a reference to a "moderate" oven and wonder how hot this might be? You can assume it is about 350 degrees F.

FAQs

Are temperature conversions exact? ›

And once the intercept is removed the difference is just in slope: 180/100 or 9/5. Yes, the common formula to convert degrees Celsius to degrees Fahrenheit, by multiplying by 9/5 and then adding 32, is exact.

How to memorize temperature conversion formula? ›

For a quick and dirty approximation, subtract 30 from the Fahrenheit and divide by two to get the Celsius; or to go the other way, double it and add 30. Otherwise, remember some exact Celsius to Fahrenheit conversions: 10 to 50, 15 to 59, 20 to 68, 25 to 77.

What are the three formulas for temperature conversions? ›

Temperature Conversion Formula Table
UnitTo CelsiusTo Fahrenheit
Celsius (C)C (°)C(9⁄5) + 32
Fahrenheit(F − 32) × 5⁄9F
KelvinK – 273.15(K – 273.15) * 9/5 + 32

Is 273.15 an exact number? ›

The Kelvin and the degree Celsius are the same size. Note that 273.15 is an exact number.

What is the simple temperature conversion? ›

To convert Fahrenheit to Celsius, we use the formula F = 1.8C + 32. To convert Celsius to Fahrenheit, we use the formula C = (F - 32) / 1.8. To convert Kelvin to Celsius, we use the formula C = K - 273.15. To covert Celsius to Kelvin, we use the formula K = C + 273.15.

What is 99.9 temperature conversion? ›

Normal temperatures can vary throughout the day, with lower temperatures occurring in the early morning and higher temperatures in the late afternoon, sometimes reaching 99.9° F (37.7° C) in adults.

How do you convert F to C without a calculator? ›

Fahrenheit to Celsius, subtract 30 then divide by 2. Celsius to Fahrenheit, multiply by 2 then add 30.

How to easily convert Fahrenheit to Celsius without math? ›

If you want to convert Fahrenheit to Celsius, do the opposite: subtract 30 from the temperature in degrees Fahrenheit, and then divide by 2 to get the temperature in degrees Celsius. = 27 °C (In reality, 84 °F is equivalent to 28.89 °C—again, that's a pretty close estimate!).

Why do you add 32 when converting Celsius to Fahrenheit? ›

Water freezes at 0°C and 32°F, so the Celsius and Fahrenheit scales start with different points (0 vs 32). If we want to relate them using an equation form, then we need to add/subtract 32 to make both sides equal. So, at this level (freezing point of water), the equation formed is °F = 9/5 × °C + 32.

How to easily convert F to C?

What is the formula for temperature to energy conversion? ›

The quantitative relationship between heat transfer and temperature change contains all three factors: Q = mcΔT, where Q is the symbol for heat transfer, m is the mass of the substance, and ΔT is the change in temperature. The symbol c stands for specific heat and depends on the material and phase.

How to do temperature conversion in chemistry? ›

You should add 273 or 273.15 to the C temperature value to convert to Kelvin and then subtract 273 or 273.15 from the K value to get the C value.

What is the formula for temperature to pressure conversion? ›

Compute the ratio between pressure and temperature: k = p₁/T₁. Multiplying any value of temperature by k, you can find the corresponding pressure in the same container: p₂ = k × T₂. You can find the temperature by dividing each value of pressure by k: T₂ = p₂/k.
